IOM’s regional office for Southern Africa is based in South Africa and supports IOM activities in the entire SADC (Southern Africa Development Community) region. IOM also has offices in Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
 
TANZANIA – IOM Joins UN High Commissioner for Refugees and Government of Tanzania to Host Regional Conference on Mixed Movements and Irregular Migration

tanzaniaIOM in conjunction with the UNHCR and the Government of Tanzania will facilitate a regional conference with states and civil society stakeholders next week in Dar es Salaam to discuss the mixed movement of people that is currently taking place between the East, Horn and Great Lakes regions of Africa to the southern part of the continent.

ZAMBIA- IOM Conducts Training of Trainers for Law Enforcement Officers Implementing New Counter Trafficking Law

IOM Zambia is conducting a training of trainers for law enforcement instructors at the Lilayi Police Training College in Lusaka, Zambia.

The five-day training, which concludes today, aims to provide officers with the necessary skills to train others on the practical implementation of the law to fight human trafficking.

IOM Launches Expanded HIV Prevention and Health Promotion Programme for Migrants and Mobile Populations in East and Southern Africa

migrantsThe International Organization for Migration (IOM)’s Regional Office for Southern Africa, in partnership with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has announced the geographic and thematic expansion of the Partnership on HIV and Mobility in Southern Africa (PHAMSA) Programme, to include East Africa.

IOM and Partners Plan Response to Potential Xenophobic Violence

 IOM is currently working with the South African Government, UN agencies and local NGOs to plan for a possible exodus of vulnerable Zimbabwean migrants fleeing threats of post World Cup xenophobic violence in South Africa.  

The IOM reception and support centre located in the border town of Beitbridge reports increased traffic of Zimbabweans who have decided to temporarily return home because of fears of xenophobic flare-ups in South Africa.

MOZAMBIQUE - Regional Workshop on HIV Responses for Mine Workers, their Families and Affected Communities

 The IOM office of Mozambique hosted a two-day regional workshop on HIV responses for mine workers, their families and affected communities in southern Africa.

The meeting, which opened on 27 May in Maputo, was organized in partnership with the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and was hosted by the NGO TEBA Development.
