ON THE GROUND IN LESOTHO AND MOZAMBIQUE TEBA Limited is a service organisation primarily responsible for the recruitment of mineworkers for the South African mining industry. TEBA Development is its NGO arm and has been active in providing home-based care for HIV and AIDS infected and affected ex-mineworkers, their families and communities since 2002.IOM previously partnered with TEBA Development in Lesotho on a project targeting Basotho migrant mine workers and their dependents through activities in HIV prevention, information dissemination, access to VCT services, and condoms distribution. The project was managed by PSI Lesotho, who implemented project activities through the network of TEBA district offices around Lesotho. At the district offices and in mining communities, mine workers and their families were provided with VCT outreach services, peer education, Information Education and Communication (IEC) material and condoms, and were encouraged to visit PSI’s New Start VCT centres in Maputsoe, Maseru, Mafeteng, Butha Buthe and Qacha’s Nek. In partnership with TEBA Development, IOM has built upon its previous work in Lesotho, expanding into Mozambique. The project also undertakes increasing efforts to tackle structural components driving HIV within the mining sector. The main target group is mine workers’ families and departing mine workers. In Lesotho the project will be rolled out in the Leribe district whilst in Mozambique two villages, Machileni and 3 de Fecereiro, in the Xai Xai district will be the initial staring point. In late 2007-early 2008, TEBA Development is undertaking a mini survey to assess the needs and HIV knowledge and attitudes of the target group. Once this information is analysed a more detailed plan of action can be developed that is tailored to the specific needs to the different groups
