SOUTH AFRICAN POST OFFICE (SAPO) JOINS IOM/METRO-FM INITIATIVE TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC  AND BRING RELIEF ASSISTANCE TO VICTIMS OF XENOPHOBIA

The South African Post Office (SAPO) has joined forces with IOM’s  Southern African Regional Office and South Africa’s largest urban commercial radio station, Metro FM to educate the public on the dangers of xenophobia bring relief assistance to  victims of recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

SAPO has set up donation boxes at selected post offices, and will take charge of delivering the material donations of the public to central distribution points across the country. In addition, SAPO offices, which receive millions of people every month, will display anti-xenophobia posters commissioned by METRO FM countrywide.

Meanwhile, METRO FM’s on-air campaign educates 5.6 million listeners about diversity ad tolerance, and encourages them to make material donations at the Post Offices, or to make a small financial contribution by smsing the word “CHANGE” to the number 34064. The money will be used by IOM to provide assistance to the displaced migrants based on its ongoing needs assessments.
IOM has provided 2000 assistance packs containing basic sanitary and nutritional items including mats and blankets, as well as 500 baby kits, to meet the immediate needs of displaced victims.

While the government works towards reintegration of displaced migrants in their local communities, meeting their needs at temporary shelter sites where they are currently hosted remains challenging. The provision of adequate nutrition and hygienic conditions, especially for children and infants has been identified as a concern. In addition, the lightweight tents provide inadequate protection from the winter cold, increasing the risk of respiratory infections in children and the elderly; and amongst other concerns,  many of the displaced children are not able to go to school due to fear of attacks, as well as the far distance
s from school.

SAPO, IOM and METRO FM have all expressed the wish to carry this partnership into other long-term anti-xenophobia interventions.
